As of April 17, 2006 the latest Java release available for OS 10.4 is Java 2 SE
5.0 Release 4. This version includes java version 1.5 which is required to
run SkyView in a Jar. Download this release from
the Apple Java Download Page.
Installation of previous version
Installation of the previous Java release Java 2 SE 5.0 Release 3
which also includes java version 1.5 does not change the default version
of Java on your Mac from Java 1.4.2 to Java 1.5. If you use this release rather the latest you can change the preferred Java version for applications and
applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed
by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.
Additionally, the java command located in /usr/bin will not be replaced.
The path of the new java command after installation is
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Commands/java.
You can add this to your PATH environment variable or run SkyView using the
full directory path. The following command should work:
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Commands/java -jar skyview.jar survey=dss position=3c273
